Collage
My work is about the vessel in all its many forms, as a symbol of journey and for self. I am concerned with memory and associations concerning journey, identity and a sense of time and place. Embedded in each piece is an individual story, or a part of a story that contributes to a conversation when in the larger context of my life's work. The vessel is one of the most universal and yet individual forms. It is my point of departure to explore an emotion, an idea or a response to a specific incident or period of time. To express these ideas using collage I use a wide variety of materials: scraps of paper, threads, teabags, bits found on walks, netting, fabrics, security envelopes, gesso, tea and walnut dye, kakishibu, paints... I have a drawer where things are put for someday, for when I am moved to sit and listen, then work in dialogue to express something I am called to say.
